Cimolai Technology showcases how ASTM Standards support bespoke engineering

From iconic structures to themed entertainment installations, Cimolai Technology highlights the role of ASTM standards in delivering custom mechanical solutions with safety and reliability.

 

Cimolai Technology has been recognized by ASTM International for its approach to bespoke engineering and for its commitment to applying internationally recognized standards to complex mechanical systems.

Based in northern Italy, Cimolai Technology has built its identity around the design and delivery of tailor-made solutions. Rather than offering standardized products, the company develops custom mechanical systems designed to meet the specific operational and architectural needs of each client. Since 2004, this approach has led to the realization of hundreds of specialized applications across infrastructure, construction, shipbuilding, aerospace, and entertainment.

Among the projects highlighted are movable lock gates for the Panama Canal expansion, transporters for solid propellant engines at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, large gantry cranes for cruise ship construction, and the moving building system at Hudson Yards in New York City. These examples reflect Cimolai Technology’s ability to engineer highly customized solutions for technically demanding environments.

ASTM International also points to two significant installations completed by Cimolai Technology in New York City’s themed entertainment sector: The Climb at Hudson Yards and The Beam at Top of the Rock, 30 Rockefeller Center. Both projects were developed using ASTM standards and represent important examples of how technical compliance supports innovative design in highly regulated urban contexts.

For The Climb, Cimolai Technology applied ASTM F2959, the standard practice for aerial adventure courses. For The Beam, the company relied on ASTM F2291, F1193, and F770, covering design, quality and construction, as well as ownership, operation, maintenance, and inspection of amusement rides and devices.

These projects required a particularly rigorous approval process, involving multiple permitting authorities and extensive review by the New York City Department of Buildings. According to ASTM’s account, Cimolai Technology engineers and management successfully demonstrated compliance with adopted ASTM codes for design, manufacturing, installation, and operation, supporting the approval of both installations within Manhattan.

The article also underlines Cimolai Technology’s active role in the ASTM standards environment. The company uses ASTM standards as operational guidelines for projects and contributes to the development of existing and new standards. This engagement strengthens internal expertise while also providing assurance to clients, partners, and permitting authorities that each solution is designed not only to meet formal requirements, but also to reflect the broader technical intent behind them.
